How to Easily Clean Your Shower Head with White Vinegar

If you've noticed that your shower head isn't performing as well as it used to, with decreased water pressure, it may be due to mineral deposits that have built up inside it. These mineral deposits, typically composed of calcium and magnesium, can accumulate over time and clog the small holes in your shower head, leading to reduced water flow and pressure. Fortunately, you can easily remove these mineral deposits using household white vinegar.

White vinegar is an acidic solution that is effective at dissolving and breaking down mineral deposits. Here's how to use it to clean your shower head (prefer to watch a video tutorial? View it here):

  1. Fill a plastic bag with enough white vinegar to fully submerge the shower head. I’ve found that Ziplok freezer bags are best as they don’t leak!

  2. Carefully submerge the shower head in the bag and ensure that it's completely covered with the vinegar. Secure it around the shower head with a rubber band or tape.

  3. Let the shower head soak in the vinegar for at least 30-60 minutes or overnight for stubborn deposits.

  4. After soaking, rinse it thoroughly with water to remove any vinegar residue. If any mineral deposits remain, take a non-scratch sponge like a Scrub Daddy sponge and some Bar Keepers Friend (the MORE spray is my favorite for this) and manually scrub it off before rinsing again.

It's important to note that you should not use any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on your shower head, as these can damage the finish and cause permanent damage. White vinegar is a safe and effective alternative that can help you keep your shower head clean and functioning properly. By taking the time to clean your shower head (I suggest doing this at least once a year), you can ensure that it continues to function properly and maintain good water pressure.
